Ken is a Brisbane-based barrister who has practised in the area of insurance law for more than 30 years.  Prior to transitioning to the bar, he was head of insurance practice at Minter Ellison.

His practice has included almost all areas of insurance.  He has focused primarily on defence work involving third party claims for most classes including Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, Construction Risks, Directors and Officers, Statutory Liability, Marine, Aviation and Product Liability.  His extensive front-end experience includes drafting policy wordings for Australian and international insurers and advising corporate clients in relation to insurance programs as they relate to contractual indemnities, insurance obligations and limitations of liability.

He regularly presents on these issues at insurance industry events.

He has extensive experience in relation to coverage issues including fraud and arson.  He acted for the insurer who successfully defended a major arson claim in Cassa Bedding Pty Ltd v Insurance Australia Ltd [2022] QSC 001.  He acted for the insurer in the successful defence of a claim against a director which was defended on the basis of non-disclosure in Fitzgerald, Tempo Holidays Pty Ltd (In Liq) v Tully [2024] FCA 391.  He also acted for an insurer in the successful defence of a multi party motor vehicle claim which resulted in finding of a conspiracy to commit fraud against the insurer in Loh v Sun and RACQ Insurance (Victorian Magistrates Court M10578351).

He has acted in all types of professional liability claims including financial planners, insurance brokers and engineers.

He was named Queensland’s 2019 Insurance Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers.  He sat as a professional member of the Legal Practice Tribunal for 12 years.  He also lectured in insurance law at the University of Queensland’s T C Beirne School of Law for more than 10 years.
